Lauren N. Heckelman, Ph.D.

My name is Lauren Heckelman, and I am currently a Lecturer in the Discipline of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and the BME Undergraduate Chair at Columbia University. I teach junior and senior undergraduate students in BME lab and engineering design courses.

I'm a proud three-time Duke University alumna. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in BME in Spring 2016, a Master of Science in BME in Fall 2017, and my Ph.D. in BME in May 2022. I also completed the Duke Graduate School's Certificate in College Teaching and the Thompson Writing Program's Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching Writing in the Disciplines during my PhD studies.

I previously worked in Dr. Lou DeFrate's Musculoskeletal Bioengineering Laboratory at Duke University, where I used magnetic resonance imaging, solid modeling, and image processing techniques to investigate human hip and knee mechanics in vivo. My research interests include orthopaedic biomechanics, musculoskeletal imaging, and signal and image processing.
